Mille Lacs Economic Relief Package Information

Hello Everyone!

The Economic Relief package if finally complete and Mille Lacs County is ready to administer.

The relief consists of 3.6 million in funds available in loans up to $100,000, grants up to $50,000 (only available if you absolutely can’t qualify for a loan) and up to $5,000 in tourism grants.

Here is a link to the County website where you will find all the necessary documents to start the process – http://www.co.mille-lacs.mn.us/index.asp?SEC=CA0B02DB-CC6C-47E5-BB6E-E47470DDB29E&DE=E070E45A-E0B1-487B-B4D8-E45DE47E2C0B&Type=B_PR

PLEASE do not be discouraged by the language in the application.  Much of the language was required by the State but the County has the full authority as to how it is applied.

Funds are available until June 30, 2017 and are on a first come first serve basis if you qualify.

There are three main criteria that must be met for you to qualify otherwise everything is on the table and it’s locally controlled.  Meaning Mille Lacs County sets the guidelines and structures, not the State of MN and they will do everything in their power to make sure the funds are available to qualified businesses.  The 3 basic eligibility requirements are:

  1. Be a business located within one of the following municipalities surrounding Mille Lacs Lake. Aitkin County:  Hazelton, Wealthwood, Malmo, and Lakeside Townships Crow Wing County: City of Garrison; Garrison and Roosevelt Townships Mille Lacs County:  Cities of Isle, Wahkon, and Onamia; East Side, Isle Harbor, South Harbor, and Kathio Townships
  2. Be an eligible business from the following industries as defined in the North American Industry Classification System: accommodation, restaurants, bars, amusement and recreation, food and beverages retail, general and miscellaneous retail, sporting goods, museums, historical sites, health and personal care, gas stations, general merchandise, business and professional membership, movies, or non-retailer as determined by Mille Lacs County in consultation with the Commissioner of Employee and Economic Development.
  3. Document a reduction of at least ten percent in gross receipts in any two-year period since 2010.  If you have only owned the business for 1-2 years you can use the previous owners financial information if they are willing to provide it to the County.

When making your application you can request the terms that may best suit your business.  Examples:

  • You can propose the interest rate you want to pay which could be 0%.
  • You can request that payments be deferred for 5 years.
  • You can request that 50% of the loan is forgivable if the business remains open for 10 years.
  • You can propose the amortization and loan terms.

Please take some time to read through the documents.  There is assistance available to help you with business plans, etc. if needed.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Pat Oman at Mille Lacs County.  You can also call Tina Chapman #320-676-8664 with questions and if she can’t answer them, she will get the answers for you.

Thanks and feel free to pass this on to anyone you think could qualify/benefit from the program.
